The recently concluded Kerala panchayat polls have shown a significant increase in female participation rates, with women contestants winning in record numbers. According to the State Election Commission, a total of 1247 women candidates won in the polls, accounting for approximately 42% of the total seats. This marks a substantial rise from the 2015 polls, where women winners accounted for around 35% of the total seats. The increase in female participation can be attributed to the efforts of various women’s organizations and political parties, who have been actively working to promote women’s empowerment and representation in local governance.
For instance, the Kerala unit of the Indian National Congress had fielded a total of 337 women candidates, of which 217 won. Similarly, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had fielded 246 women candidates, with 185 emerging victorious. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated party, also fielded a significant number of women candidates, with 56 winning in the polls. The increased participation of women in the panchayat polls is a welcome trend, and is expected to have a positive impact on the overall governance and development of the state.
As Dr. M.K. Muneer, a senior Congress leader, noted, ‘The increased participation of women in the panchayat polls is a reflection of the growing awareness and empowerment of women in Kerala. It is a positive trend that will have far-reaching consequences for the state’s development.’ The panchayat polls have also seen a significant increase in the number of young candidates, with many first-time contestants winning in the polls.
This trend is expected to bring in fresh ideas and perspectives to the local governance, and is seen as a positive development by many observers. Overall, the Kerala panchayat polls have been marked by a significant increase in female participation, and are expected to have a positive impact on the state’s governance and development. With the polls now over, attention is shifting to the upcoming municipality elections, which are expected to be held later this year. It remains to be seen whether the trend of increased female participation will continue in these elections as well.
