The recent surge in wrestling talent from Karnataka has sparked a heated debate about the need for policy changes to support these athletes. With 12 national champions hailing from the state in the past year alone, wrestlers are now demanding better infrastructure, training facilities, and financial support from the government. According to statistics, Karnataka has produced 25% of India’s national wrestling champions in the past five years, despite having limited access to resources.
The state’s wrestling association has been vocal about the need for a dedicated wrestling academy, which would provide athletes with access to world-class coaching, training equipment, and medical facilities. However, the government has been slow to respond, citing budget constraints and bureaucratic red tape. As the demand for policy change gains momentum, wrestlers and coaches are coming together to raise awareness about the issue.
On February 10, a group of wrestlers and coaches held a press conference in Bengaluru, calling on the government to take immediate action. ‘We are not asking for the moon,’ said former national champion, Suresh Kumar. ‘We just want the basic facilities to help our athletes compete at the international level.’ The Karnataka government has announced plans to allocate Rs 5 crore for the development of sports infrastructure in the state, but wrestlers say this is not enough. ‘We need a dedicated wrestling academy, not just a few cosmetic changes,’ said Kumar. As the debate rages on, one thing is clear – Karnataka’s wrestlers will not back down until their demands are met. With the state elections just around the corner, the wrestling community is hoping that the new government will take their demands seriously and implement the necessary policy changes.
The fate of Karnataka’s wrestling talent hangs in the balance, and only time will tell if the government will respond to their demands. The current situation is a stark reminder of the struggles faced by athletes in India, where a lack of resources and infrastructure hinders their ability to compete at the highest level. As the wrestling community continues to fight for their rights, it remains to be seen whether the government will take concrete steps to address their concerns. For now, the wrestlers will continue to train, compete, and demand policy change, in the hopes that one day, they will have the support they need to succeed.
