The recent Kerala panchayat polls have seen a significant increase in voter turnout rates, with 78.64% of eligible voters casting their ballots. This is a marked improvement from the 2015 polls, which saw a turnout of 74.32%. The increase in voter participation has been attributed to various factors, including the effective implementation of the Election Commission’s voter awareness campaigns and the heightened interest in local governance among the electorate.

The polls, which were held on December 14, 2020, saw the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerge victorious, winning 514 out of the 941 gram panchayats. The United Democratic Front (UDF) came in second, winning 324 gram panchayats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 23. The increased voter turnout has been welcomed by political analysts, who see it as a positive sign for the health of democracy in the state. ‘The high voter turnout is a reflection of the growing awareness among the people about the importance of local governance and their desire to participate in the democratic process,’ said Dr.

J. Prabash, a political analyst at the University of Kerala. The polls also saw a significant increase in the number of women candidates, with 44.72% of the total candidates being women.

This is a marked improvement from the 2015 polls, which saw 36.44% women candidates. The increased participation of women in the electoral process has been welcomed by women’s rights activists, who see it as a step towards greater representation and empowerment. The Kerala panchayat polls have set a positive precedent for future elections in the state, with the high voter turnout and increased participation of women being seen as key factors in the success of the polls.
