In a historic milestone for the state of Kerala, the recent legislative assembly elections saw the highest ever female voter turnout, with women constituting nearly 47.6% of the total voters. According to the Election Commission of India, a total of 1,33,93,171 female voters exercised their franchise, surpassing the previous record set in the 2016 assembly elections. This upward trend in female voter participation has been observed across various districts, with some recording an increase of over 5% in female voter turnout. Experts attribute this surge to increased awareness and empowerment among women, as well as targeted campaigns by political parties to mobilize female voters.

The district of Thrissur witnessed the highest female voter turnout, with 51.2% of women casting their votes. The election also saw a significant increase in the number of female candidates, with 119 women contesting from various parties. While the overall voter turnout in the state was 77.68%, the high female voter turnout is being seen as a positive trend for the state’s democratic landscape. As the state gears up for the next round of elections, political parties are expected to further intensify their efforts to engage with female voters and address their concerns.

With the Election Commission of India implementing various initiatives to promote voter awareness and participation, Kerala is likely to continue witnessing high voter turnouts in future elections. The state’s example is also expected to inspire other states to focus on increasing female voter participation, leading to a more inclusive and representative democracy. As per the data available, the top three districts with the highest female voter turnout were Thrissur, Kottayam, and Idukki.

The data also indicates that the voter turnout among women in the age group of 18-25 was significantly higher than in previous elections, indicating a growing interest in politics among young women. The Kerala Legislative Assembly Elections have set a new benchmark for female voter participation, and it remains to be seen how this trend will shape the state’s politics in the coming years.
